Tomé e Príncipe. I didn’t arrive with a defined project, except with an interest in public space and how it’s used. I was repeatedly met with openness. Many people asked to be photographed. Children play in rivers and on roadsides, making games from wire, sticks, and tyres. Work spills into the street. Play, movement, and learning happen in shared spaces. The photos centre on something enduring: public space as a place of life. For me, these photographs are about presence — about people occupying the world around them, and about being seen within it. historic carnival in Italy. I attended the carnival through a personal connection and photographed events as they unfolded over the course of a few days. From Sunday to Tuesday between 1pm and 5pm, there are oranges being thrown in all of the town’s squares. Ivrea becomes a place of collective participation, where thousands of people gather to celebrate and reenact.&nbsp; At the centre of the carnival is the Battaglia delle Arance — an orange-throwing battle that shuts down the town and fills its streets, squares, and bridges. From early afternoon, oranges are thrown at close range, bodies collide, and injuries are expected and worn proudly.&nbsp; In medieval times it was tradition that the Baron of the land would act out ‘jus prima noctis’ by taking a bride’s virginity on the night of her wedding. It is said that the Vezzosa Mugnaia (Miller’s Daughter) Violetta refuted this and beheaded the baron, setting the town free with a heroic act of rebellion. For me, these photographs are about gathering — about how people come together through celebration and shared experience. I am interested in the anthropology of people: how communities mark time, remember history, and create moments where individuals become part of something collective. This project sits alongside my wider interest in celebrations, community, and public space. The ways people use ritual to connect, belong, and recognise themselves within a group. Theyyam ritual near Payyannur, in North Kerala, India. Theyyam is a ritual performance tradition practiced in villages and local shrines across this region, shaped by long-standing oral histories, belief systems, and caste-based roles. The ritual unfolds in stages. It begins with fire, movement, and metal instruments, before the performer takes on full costume and adornment. Through this transformation, the performer embodies the deity being honoured. Music, dance, fire, and animal sacrifice form part of the ritual offering. Theyyam functions as a form of worship and communal gathering. People come to receive blessings, guidance, and protection, and the ritual plays a central role in local religious and social life. I was drawn to this event through my interest in human celebration and ritual — in how communities gather around shared belief, repetition, and collective experience. The event takes place each November and centres on the carrying and running of flaming tar barrels through the town’s streets. The origins of the tradition are uncertain, with links suggested to early modern celebrations, local guild customs, and pre-industrial fire festivals. What remains consistent is its form: selected local families carry the barrels on their backs, running through dense crowds as the fire burns. The event is tightly bound to place and community. Participation is inherited, regulated, and local; the town closes in on itself for the night, and the ritual follows a structure that has changed little over time. Spectators line the streets, but the event remains rooted in those who carry it forward each year. I photographed the tar barrels after studying in Cornwall, drawn to local traditions and the ways communities maintain identity. The project focused on traditional and independent craft at a time when many small-scale makers were ageing or working without clear succession.&nbsp; Although the wider project did not continue beyond its initial stages, a small selection of portraits and studio studies remain. Included here is work made with Geoff James, the last person producing Troika pottery under Foster’s Pottery near Redruth. residency, run by Tom Whitwell. Dyski organises immersive, place-based residencies and workshops for musicians and sound artists, creating focused environments for collaboration, experimentation, and exchange. Sound Maps took place in 2024 and 2025, bringing together a small group of participants to explore sound, composition, and response to landscape over several days of concentrated work. I documented the residency as it unfolded — recording moments of listening, field recording, discussion, rehearsal, and shared practice. The beautiful albums produced during the residency can be listened to via Bandcamp. At the time, the ship operated as part of the New Dawn Traders line-up, a company that connected sailing cargo vessels with local businesses, moving goods through wind-powered trade routes. This series documents the vessel on one 5-day siling trip and the wonderful crew: Emily, Seb, Nono &amp; Nic.
